Grinding & Clenching
Grinding and clenching are common nighttime behaviors that can lead to tooth wear, sore jaw muscles, and tender jaw joints. Unless you have been told by a significant other that you are grinding or clenching, you most likely are unaware of the condition. The aforementioned symptoms are typically the early indicators of such behavior.
A custom nightguard is made to address this issue. A nightguard is a custom-fitted piece of hard acrylic that is worn like a mouthguard. It places a layer of protection between the teeth during sleep to prevent the damage that occurs as teeth grind and clench. It has also been shown to minimize muscle activity which allows the jaw muscles to relax.
To make a nightguard, an impression is taken of your teeth and sent to a dental laboratory where technicians will fabricate a guard to fit you perfectly. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, please ask Dr. Bender or Dr. Lewis about a nightguard at your next dental checkup.
Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that affects many people without their knowledge. It has been associated with medical issues such as heart attack, stroke, and dementia. If you snore loudly, have trouble sleeping at night, staying awake during the day, or consistently feel worn down, you may suffer from sleep apnea.
After having a diagnosis of sleep apnea from your medical provider, we can assist by creating a custom sleep apnea oral device. These devices attach to both upper and lower teeth and position the lower jaw forward, preventing the airway from closing off as you sleep. These devices are life changing.
